On the whole, KASHMAKASH is an exemplary piece of work that deserves to be taken to an expansive gamut of spectators. However, it will be relished more by the evolved and progressive audience, those who wish to watch a new story unfold on screen. With KASHMAKASH, Rituparno Ghosh relives the magical imagery of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The delicate relationships and the drama have been beautifully presented on celluloid by this accomplished storyteller. Also, the film captivates the audience and transports them to a transcendent world, to an era most of us have no clue of. In fact, the film is a treat for aficionados of qualitative cinema who yearn for interesting stories to unfold on screen.

One thing is without dispute. Raima Sen was born to play a Rabindranath Tagore heroineThe relationship is intimate, delicate and yet not cheesy. When the two cry while singing together or exchange confidences on love, time stops. The other men are incidental to the plot. They exist only to underline another kind of female power, in the character of Riya Sen, a semi-literate abandoned woman who refuses to give up hope. The yearning for true love, the difference between a chot and a zakhm, the inevitability of waiting. With Ghosh's sense of drama and Tagore's words, can this be anything but engaging?

Kashmakash takes a serious beating in its pace. Rituporno Ghosh's screenplay is slow and dragging. It gets really confusing after a few sequences that leave you flustered. The storyline appears disjointed at many occasions making it a tiring experience. All in all, Kashmakash may find it really hard to hold audience's interest owing to its sensibilities but for a true cinema love this Bengali feast surely deserves a shot.
