The town of Radiator Springs & its various inhabitants which played such an important role in Lightning McQueen's (voice of Owen Wilson) journey of self-discovery the first time around are this time relegated to cameo-like screen time early on and late in the film. McQueen is competing in a World Grand Prix accompanied by his faithful tow-truck buddy Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy). Everything is going great until a fallout between the two sends mater on an adventure of his own resulting in Mater being the main protagonist of the piece rather than McQueen. British super-spy car agents, lots of globe-trotting, alternate fuel conspiracies and much more make up the backbone of this flick.
Right off the glorious opening sequences which mirrors and betters the best of what any James Bond flick has to offer, the audience is in for what is essentially an action-adventure movie. This 'Bond-for-kids' version has all the pyrotechnics and dazzle people expect from a kids flick and oddly enough holds a nice little tale about the secondary characters in life who might hold the key to something bigger than they are usually given credit for. But unfortunately since the movie most of the time is lost in the slapstick and trying to be cool routine it forgets the essence of the tale, thus resulting in an underwhelming final product.
The one thing I can't find fault about is the glorious animation which is an absolute beauty. The rich color palate and the creatively conjured world full of automobiles in everything is such a sight to behold that I was constantly keeping an eye out for the smaller details. Just look at the fluid animation in the opening scene to realize how well it has been rendered.
'Cars 2' may not be the perfect animated movie and is a far cry at time from Pixars usual lofty standards but it is a perfectly enjoyable watch which provides enough laughs and dazzle for your money.
