The film has many things going for it, and yet has a few fatal flaws that prevent it from rising above its hackneyed script.
A super hero who doesnt believe he can save the world till his pretty eye candy of a girl friend is captured by geeky-friend-turned-evil-mini on, Green Lantern has a storyline that has been done to death. Performances in the film are painfully affected and over the top. Characters lack depth and end up being two dimensional card board cut outs, mouthing inane lines without any conviction.
Green Lantern relies heavily on CGI. A whole new world of Oa is created, aka Avatar, but this again reeks of computer game-standards. Some scenes in fact looked straight out of our homegrown super flop Love Story 2050.
Add to this, is the slow snail-like pace the film unravels at. Story and character settings take like forever and there is far too less action in between to keep the viewer interested. The good action scene, at the climax, is too late and too short to engage.
The story also suffers from a weak villain, Parallax. A CGI character, there is very little in it to actually fear. So when the heroine is held hostage by Hector, the geek friend turned villains form, one really doesnt bother since we already know she is going to be saved and the evil vanquished anyways.
And of course, the film has to be in 3D. The inherent problems with 3D exist here too. Its too dark, good in the CGI parts, but really sad on real sets in the portions on earth.
Green Lantern disappoints, especially since its not even been a week since the exhilarating high of X-Men First Class. It isnt a bad film it just should have been so much better.
